Elsewhere

An unfamiliar city at dusk through a workspace window, with a desk and pencil in the foreground.

An idea can sound reckless in one city and overdue in another. Spend enough time moving between the two and the word realistic starts to lose some of its authority. Every place has a sense of what a serious person does, which risks are acceptable, and how much ambition can be expressed before it becomes embarrassing. Much of this passes for common sense until another place makes a different set of assumptions feel just as obvious.

That perspective is rarely acquired in comfort. In a new country, small tasks expose how much of competence was familiarity. An entire day can disappear into something that used to require no thought. The usual signals carry less weight. Being capable and being recognised as capable turn out to be separate problems, and rebuilding the second requires a patience the first may never have taught.

After a few experiences of that, polish becomes harder to confuse with depth. Someone can struggle through an introduction and become exact when the conversation reaches the problem they have spent years with. An explanation can sound strange because the thing being described has no familiar category yet. Those are easy moments to miss when the delivery is doing most of the persuading. There is a reason to ask another question.

There is happiness, too, in being understood by someone who grew up with a different idea of almost everything. It makes belonging feel less predetermined. Yet it is possible to feel more at ease with the direction of a life and less at ease at the end of a day. The work is opening up; the people who would make an ordinary evening feel easy are somewhere else. A good decision can have that texture for years.

Movement can also become its own comfort zone. There is always another city to try, another circle to enter, another version of the future that has yet to be tested. The unfamiliar is useful while it changes the work. Beyond that, it can become an elegant way to postpone it.

Back at the desk, the room still has its opinions. It has become harder to mistake them for the limits of what can be made.
